Erie Metal Specialties, Inc.
Who is EMS?
Over the past two decades, Erie Metal Specialties (EMS) has made significant contributions to the construction industry in the area of expansion joint systems including:
- Introduction of colorable Santoprene material for expansion joint seals for applications where color matching is required.
- Use of Santoprene material for “winged” expansion joint systems allowed the seals to be heat spliced instead of traditional glued splices, providing better quality splices at seal intersections
- Developed a two-part epoxy seal system that incorporates and internal web structure that allows it to be used in tension and compression (J and JP Series); similar products previously available could only be used in compression. Those products rely on mechanical means (air pressure) to bond to the side walls of the joint opening, allowing them to be used in compression only.
- Expanded line of compression/tension seals to accommodate large joint openings with substantial movement (J-500 and JP-500)
- Several products developed for specific project applications (example: TMW – replaceable seal with flat walking surface)
- Innovative methods for installation of unique applications (i.e. circular columns, stairs, below grade)
In addition, EMS has become the leader in the testing of expansion joint systems. When we say we are “The Most Tested Expansion Joints in the Industry”, it is not just a slogan. Every lot of product is cycle tested to assure that it meets the requirements of ASTM E1399. In addition, specialized testing for specific applications and/or requirements has been conducted including compression and tension testing (to destruction). These tests have been conducted on various products for internal review and in response to customer’s requests.
